EMDR Intensives

EMDR Intensives offer a whole new choice for how you receive therapy and can offer some important benefits.  It works out to be like receiving several weeks or months’ worth of therapy in just a few days!

Like most types of therapy, EMDR is usually done within the confines of the typical weekly “therapy hour,” which usually runs about 55 minutes.  This isn’t because that is how EMDR is most effective, rather it is because that is what the insurance companies have said they want to cover!  People certainly do benefit from EMDR therapy done in this way, but often wish it could be more efficient.

The problem with the typical weekly “therapy hour” is that we must spend some time at the beginning of each session checking in to make sure nothing big came up during the week, getting the target set up, and getting started.  And then we also must spend some time at the end of the session closing down and making sure the client is feeling stabilized and safe to leave the office and go about daily life.  This can easily take 5-10 minutes or more on either end of the reprocessing, making the actual time spend reprocessing your target closer to 35-40 minutes.

EMDR Intensives make things much more efficient by blocking out a larger chunk of time for the session, eliminating the need for checking in and closing down every hour.  This also eliminates the need to travel to and from the office each week, which can have benefits in terms of travel time, fuel costs and taking time off work.

One way to think of it is, it is sort of like how when high schools go to block scheduling, the school days become more efficient because the teacher doesn’t have to take attendance as often, students don’t have to spend time putting away supplies as often, and half of the passing periods are eliminated.

Another way to think of it is as a “fast pass” for therapy and the benefits.  You can get at-and stay at-the heart of the issue for longer in order to accelerate your healing.

  • The short answer is, if we think of Intensives as accelerated therapy, then yes it can be right for just about anyone. We can discuss further during our consult if we feel that an Intensive with me is right for you.

To elaborate on that, some people may be ready to get into the reprocessing portion of EMDR very quickly.

Other people may not feel comfortable jumping into reprocessing as quickly. They may need a little more preparation work before they feel ready for that. (I don’t start reprocessing with a client until both the client feels and I feel that they are ready.) This means your individual Intensive may end up looking like a lot of the preparation work before reprocessing, or it may be mostly reprocessing work. Even if we aren’t able to do reprocessing during your Intensive, clients almost always report starting to feel better and more confident just by doing the preparation work.

Either way, by working through the process in an Intensive fashion, we can get closer to the destination much more quickly!

  • Unfortunately, at this point, every major commercial* insurance company is stuck in the “therapy hour” model. Not because there is any research backing this as a preferred method. Just because that is what they’ve decided they want to pay for.

This does mean that the long sessions that make EMDR Intensives, intensive, have to be paid out of pocket (though you can still use HSA or FSA accounts).

If you would like to use your insurance to help with a portion of the cost, we may be able to complete some of the preparation work in a few traditional therapy hours before shifting to intensive reprocessing. We would discuss this individually.

*If your insurance is through KanCare/Medicaid, we do have some options to use this insurance to create an Intensive experience.

  • To be honest, I cannot make any promises or guarantees. (This is true of any therapy modality or technique no matter how it is offered.)

Each client has a different background, different experiences, and different kinds of coping skills that may or may not be as helpful. Some people may feel that one Intensive is sufficient for their concerns. Others may choose to come back for another Intensive later on, or continue their work with myself or another therapist in a more traditional model.

Either way, what I can be certain of is that no matter what, we’ll be working through many weeks (likely months) worth of therapy in just a few hours or days.

  • Any sort of medical treatment, including any sort of therapy, does involve some kind of risk.

The primary risk in any kind of therapy is confronting and working through your past and how it is contributing to your present. That can certainly become uncomfortable and even upsetting at times.

That said, EMDR is non-invasive and has over 30 years of research showing it is very helpful for a lot of people. We will not be “jumping in” to the reprocessing until you and I both feel that you’re ready.

There is almost nothing that is worth doing, that doesn’t have some kind of challenge with it. This is no different.

  • That is fantastic! You’ve probably already done some of the preparation work!

EMDR Intensive work can be a great adjunct to the therapy you’re already receiving, and I would be happy to coordinate with your therapist to facilitate this.

  • No problem! Manhattan and the Flint Hills area is a great community to visit! There are plenty of hotels nearby as well as short-term rental (Airbnb/VRBO type) homes and even a beautiful State Park area to camp at (if that is your thing) all nearby! Manhattan also has some great local restaurant options. I would be happy to provide some recommendations on my favorites. This could be the ultimate self-care getaway!

If you live out of state, we may need to slightly adjust the package/prep work.

If we determine together that Intensive EMDR is a good fit for you, we’ll schedule the 90-minute session and discuss Intensive schedule. 50% of the fee is due prior to beginning the 90 minute session, the rest will be due 48 hours prior to the beginning of the first Intensive session.

  • Yes-50% of the total fee will be required prior to the start of the consult session. The remainder of the balance will be required 48 hours prior to the start of the first Intensive session.

I am willing to take payments as long as the total amount paid meets the above guidelines. Please communicate with me if this is your intention.

  • You are right, Intensive therapy can be expensive upfront.

That said, I would not offer it as an option if I didn’t believe in the efficacy of doing therapy intensively. It will be an investment in your own time and mental health.

Remember that HSA and FSA accounts can be used to pay for this service.

I am also continuing to offer regular weekly appointments so that clients continue to have the option of utilizing insurance and/or spreading out their cost.

  • Because of the necessity to block out so much time, Intensive appointments must be cancelled by two weeks (10 business days) prior to the first session in order to receive a refund, minus $150 administrative fee.

Intensive sessions may be rescheduled/adjusted one time if requested at least one week (5 business days) prior to the first session.

Below are a couple EMDR Intensive Packages that are great options. However I understand that the full packages, while a fantastic way to get through a lot of therapy in a short time, are still not inexpensive. I can also schedule extended sessions, such as 3-4 hours just once, or even 2 hour sessions. This wouldn’t be the full Intensive experience, but still would provide many of the benefits of being much more efficient than weekly hour-long sessions. You could schedule these as often as needed/you’re able. Please contact me to discuss options further.
